Serious question, why does everyone rave about the JMT?

I spent 14 days on the John Muir Trail last July and honestly I think it's overrated. The crowds were insane, I counted 47 people at one campsite near Muir Trail Ranch. I had a better time on the lesser known High Sierra Trail a couple years back, way more peace and quiet. Has anyone else found another California route that doesn't turn into a highway?

The crowds are real but that trail is popular for a reason. The scenery is next level compared to most other routes. Maybe try a shoulder season if you want less people.

Yeah @kai657 nailed it about shoulder season. I went in late September once and it was way more chill. Still saw people but not a conga line like July. The payoff is real though, that alpine meadow section is something else.
