Showerthought: cutting my water carries in half with a grocery bag liner saved my knees on the Eagle Rock loop
Did the Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas over Memorial Day and kept running out of water on the climbs because I was hauling 4 liters at a time like a dummy. A guy at the trailhead in Langley showed me his setup: he lines his pack's main compartment with a cheap 13 gallon kitchen bag and just pours a few liters in the bottom, then rolls the top down. I tried it on day two and my base weight dropped about 5 pounds since I ditched two hard bottles. The bag doubles as a pack liner when it rains, so it is not dead weight when you do not need water. I did poke a tiny hole on a sharp buckle on day three, so now I double bag it and keep the soft flasks for the actual drinking. It felt weird scooping from a creek straight into a grocery bag, but filtering it after worked fine and my shoulders thanked me on the last climb. Has anyone else messed with a bag liner for water, or am I late to this one?
