Spent $80 on a Garmin InReach Mini for the Wind River High Route and it was a total waste

I bought it for the emergency SOS feature, but the route itself is so well-defined and popular that I never felt out of touch. The real issue was the $15 monthly subscription fee you have to pay just to keep it active. For a single 7-day trip, the cost didn't make sense compared to just telling someone my plan. Has anyone else skipped the satellite messenger on a known route and been fine?

That monthly fee is the real killer. I used mine for a season and then just let the subscription drop. For a single trip on a busy trail, a detailed plan left with a friend is honestly just as good. The peace of mind is nice, but the math rarely works out unless you're going remote constantly.

Jennyh55 is right, it's another thing that feels like it's moving to a subscription. Makes you check if you're really getting your money's worth each month.

My buddy had one and forgot to cancel after his big hike, paid for three months he didn't use at all!
