Switched from the PCT route to the Tonto Trail and it blew my mind
I did the Grand Canyon rim to rim twice last year, first on the Bright Angel then the South Kaibab. Both were packed with people and felt like a parade. This spring I finally tried the Tonto Trail connecting them through the inner canyon and it was a totally different experience. The trail is harder to follow in spots and way less maintained, but I saw maybe 5 people the whole day compared to hundreds on the corridor trails. The views of the buttes and the Colorado River from that elevation are just unreal. You do need to carry more water since there are no rest stations, I packed 4 liters and barely made it. Has anyone else bailed on the main routes for a less popular alternative and felt it was worth the extra effort?
