Took a shortcut on the Salkantay Trek and ended up waist-deep in a bog for 45 minutes

I figured cutting across a wet meadow would save me 20 minutes, but instead I sank into mud up to my thighs and had to dig my boots out by hand. Did anyone else learn the hard way that those bright green patches in the Andes are NOT solid ground?

Those bright green patches are NOT solid ground" - I learned that one sinkin' into a bog in Scotland once. Thought I was bein' clever and ended up lookin' like a swamp creature for the rest of the day.

Gotta respectfully disagree here. Those bright green patches are usually the most solid ground in the Andes if you read them right. The trick is looking for the small, darker green tufts mixed in with the light green. If it's ALL one smooth bright green with no variation, sure, it's a bog. But I've saved hours crossing meadows like that by stepping on the clumps of thicker grass that act like little islands. Sounds like you just hit a bad patch, not that all green ground is fake.
