Took me 4 years to realize I was filtering water wrong
Used to just pump straight into my dirty bottle. Then a ranger at Glacier pointed out I was basically washing my filter with sediment. Dumb moment. Anyone else make that mistake their first few trips?

Oh man, I did the exact same thing with my first hand pump. I remember watching a video later and facepalming so hard I think I gave myself a headache. I was pumping through at least a pound of silt before I figured out you're supposed to let it settle first. Felt like such a genius.

Totally get that feeling @alex_taylor10, it's like life teaches you the same lesson over and over but in different ways. It reminds me of how people jam their phone chargers in upside down for 10 seconds before flipping it, or try to force a zip tie closed without reading the instructions. We all have this habit of jumping into things headfirst and then realizing we missed the simple step that would've saved us. It's almost like our brains are wired to make the mistake first so we can actually remember the right way later.
