Vent: that $180 ultralight bear can was the worst gear buy I ever made
I bought a carbon fiber bear can for my 9 day trip through the Winds last August and it cracked on day 3 near Titcomb Basin. The lid seal failed too, so rain got in and soaked my food and my sleeping bag. I paid $180 for something a $70 Garcia would have handled fine, and I had to bail out at Elk Heart Pass and hitch to Pinedale. Save your money and just rent or buy the cheap heavy one, the weight savings is not worth the risk. Has anyone found a can that actually survives a real thru hike without falling apart?
