Why does nobody talk about ditching the bear canister for a hang on the JMT
Did the Rae Lakes loop last month with a hung bag instead of my BV500 and my pack was 3 pounds lighter while my food stayed untouched, has anyone else made this swap on the Sierra stretches or am I asking for trouble out there?
Did the same swap on the Evolution Valley stretch two summers ago and never looked back. My shoulders were killing me with the canister digging in, so I switched to a proper PCT hang and the weight drop was real. A good hang takes maybe ten minutes once you get the rock bag toss down, and the trees up there make it easy. Never had a bear get into mine, and I camped in some pretty heavy bear spots. The trick is getting it high enough and far enough from the trunk so they can't reach it from a branch. Just hang it before dark and you're fine.
