A neighbor's fire pit got out of hand last weekend and it was a real wake-up call.

We were all hanging out in my yard in Springfield when a gust of wind sent embers from their pit into a pile of dry leaves. It took three garden hoses to put it out. How far away from your house do you keep your fire pit now?

Man, that's scary. We had a close call like that a few years back, just some sparks hitting an old patio chair cushion. Now I keep our pit a good thirty feet from the house and any trees. I clear a huge circle of dirt or gravel around it too. Makes you really think about how fast things can go wrong, doesn't it?

After our own scare, I moved ours 25 feet out, and like robert_hayes said, a big gravel ring is key.

That gravel ring is a solid move for sure... but honestly, the distance is the real thing to watch. Twenty-five feet is a good start, but with how far embers can travel on a windy night, even that might not be enough buffer for some setups. It really depends on what's around your yard. Better to be way over the line than just barely on the safe side, you know?
