Can we talk about the debate on sealing vs staining a cedar fence?

My neighbor, a guy named Dave from down the street, told me I was ruining my fence by using a clear sealant instead of a solid stain. He said his fence on Elm Street has lasted 8 years with stain, while mine started fading after 2. But I like seeing the natural wood grain, you know? What do you all do for your fences - seal or stain?
