Finally got my compost pile to stop smelling like a swamp

A guy at the community garden in Bellingham showed me his layering method with cardboard and coffee grounds. Anyone have a good source for free brown material besides leaves?

Wait, you can just use cardboard? That feels like it shouldn't work.

Cardboard works better than you'd expect, @jones.blake. It's cheap, easy to cut, and holds up fine for a lot of basic projects. Maybe give it a shot before you write it off.

I used cardboard for a speaker box in high school and it lasted years. It's way stronger than people give it credit for.
