Finally had to pick between a gas fire pit and a wood burning one for my patio in Portland
I was back and forth for weeks about which to get for our little backyard hangout spot, ended up going with the wood burning option because my buddy said the smell of real smoke makes the evening. First time we lit it, the flames were huge and unpredictable and it took forever to get going plus the ash got everywhere on the concrete. Anyone else regret not going with gas when they have to deal with cleanup every time they want a fire?

Gas is way easier but you lose that whole campfire vibe right? Feel like Portland weather makes this a tougher call too because you're not using it half the year anyway. How bad was the cleanup after your first few burns, like did the ash stain your concrete or were you able to just sweep it off?

Oh the ash thing drove me nuts at first! I had a wood pit on stamped concrete and yeah, that stuff will stain if you let rain hit it before you sweep. I learned to keep a little metal ash bucket with a lid nearby and would scoop out the cold ash right after each fire. For the spots that did get dark, a stiff broom and some dish soap worked way better than I expected. Also, putting a cheap fire mat under the pit saved my concrete from those random hot ember drops that leave little burn marks.
