Found out fire ants love mulch more than dirt
I was putting down fresh cedar mulch around my fire pit last Saturday and noticed ants swarming the new piles. I thought they just nested in bare soil, so I looked it up. Turns out certain mulches create a perfect insulated home for them, especially if you lay it thick. I found this on a university extension site from Texas A&M. They said piles over 3 inches deep give ants a stable temp and moisture level they crave. Now I gotta rake my mulch thinner near the house or I'm inviting a colony to move in. Anybody else deal with ants taking over after a mulch delivery?

Three inches deep? That's wild, I figured ants just wanted dry dirt like the rest of us. Guess I better check my flower beds now.
