Had a chat with my deck builder that changed how I think about pressure washing

Last summer my guy Mike from Apex Decks in Portland told me I was blasting my cedar deck way too close with the pressure washer. He said 12 inches away max or you're basically sanding the wood down with water. Ever since I backed off and used a wider tip the wood looks way better after 8 months. Anyone else ruin a deck board from holding the wand too close?

Saw a contractor on YouTube say wetting the wood first cuts down on the grain tearing, and I can confirm that's legit after trying it myself.

I usually run a 40 degree tip at about 8-10 inches from the wood and that's worked well on my cedar fence panels. The real trick I learned was to never stop moving the wand while spraying, even a split second too long in one spot will carve a groove into the board. I also pre-wet the wood with a garden hose before I start, keeps the pressure washer from digging in as hard on dry wood.
