How my uncle's old method for leveling ground saved my weekend
I was trying to set up a new garden bed and the dirt was all bumpy. My uncle came over and told me to use a hose with water in it as a level guide. We put it between two sticks and moved the soil until the water lined up at both ends. It worked so well and my plants are now growing straight.

I saw something about that water level trick on an old home improvement show once. They called it a "bunny ear" level because of the two sticks, I think. It's basically using the fact that water always finds its own level, right. Pretty clever fix when you don't have a long enough real level.

That bunny ear level thing @ray816 mentioned is cool. My dad used a garden hose as a level once when building a deck.

That water level trick is a perfect example of old-school common sense... it uses basic physics to solve a real problem. You can make one with stuff already in your garage, which beats a trip to the hardware store. It's the kind of simple fix that gets lost in a world of fancy laser tools.
