I ran the numbers on sod versus seed for my backyard
Which side makes more sense in the long run - pay up now or wait a season?

Five years ago I was all about sod, thinking paying more upfront was the only way to go. But my neighbor seeded his whole yard and I watched his grass come in just as thick as mine by the second season. The big thing that changed my mind was seeing how much deeper his roots got compared to my shallow sod patches. Plus he saved like 60% off what I spent and his lawn actually handles drought better now. For my next house I'm definitely going with seed even if it means waiting a year for it to fill in completely. The patience pays off in the long run, no question.

Patience is one of those weird things that people in our society just hate lmao. @elizabeth_bailey26 that's a great point about the roots being deeper with seed, I never thought about that before but it makes total sense when you think about it. It's like how everyone wants the quick fix for everything nowadays, whether it's losing weight or fixing your credit score or whatever. People just don't want to wait and see the slow results that actually last longer. Your neighbor proved that the tortoise beats the hare every time when it comes to lawns. That drought handling thing is a huge bonus too, shows that the slow way really does build a stronger foundation.
