Just realized I was overwatering my hydrangeas all summer long
After losing three plants to wilting and yellow leaves, I finally tested the soil moisture with a cheap $8 meter. Turns out I was drowning them every day when they only needed water twice a week. Has anyone else killed a plant by loving it too much?

Well that hit close to home. I did the same thing with my gardenias a few years back. The leaves turned yellow and I thought, oh they need more water, so I doubled down and made it worse. It turns out too much love really can kill a plant because the roots just rot out. What got me was how the plant actually looked thirsty when it was drowning, yellow leaves and drooping look the same as underwatering sometimes. I started lifting the pots to feel how heavy they were when dry versus wet, and that helped more than any gadget. You are definitely not alone in this one, it is a hard lesson but now you know for next year.

Oh wow, the weight trick is actually genius lol. So how do you tell the difference between drooping from too much water vs not enough before it's too late?
