My dad told me to plant my new maple tree 15 feet from the house, but my neighbor said 10 feet was fine.

I listened to my neighbor and planted it 10 feet out, and now the roots are starting to push up my patio stones after just three years. Has anyone else had a tree cause damage because it was planted too close to a structure?

That "10 feet was fine" line is a classic. I see this all the time where people take the shortcut advice over the expert one, whether it's trees, home repairs, or car stuff. It usually ends up costing more to fix later.

Actually saw a study on this from a few years back. They found people often pick the cheaper short-term fix even when they know it'll cost more long-term. It's not just about saving money now, it's about the mental effort of dealing with a big project versus a quick patch.
