My neighbor called my backyard a 'dead zone' - hit different

Last Saturday I was out back trimming bushes. My neighbor Dave walked over and said my yard had zero life in it. No birds, no bugs, nothing. He pointed out how my gravel path and plastic furniture just sit there. Made me realize I turned my yard into a storage unit. Now I'm planning to put in a small water feature and some native plants. Anyone else get called out on their boring backyard setup?

Neighbors can be brutally honest but Dave's right about the gravel.

Oh man, I have been there. What worked for me was putting down a thick layer of landscaping fabric under the gravel, then adding bigger rocks on top. That way the smaller stones don't sink into the mud after a rain. Also, if you can get the gravel with jagged edges instead of the smooth round stuff, it locks together way better and doesn't scatter everywhere when kids or dogs run over it. You'll still get some stray pebbles on the lawn, but it cuts down the mess by a lot.
