Please check your fire pit ash before you dump it. I found out the hard way.
I dumped my fire pit ash into a plastic bucket on my back patio in Tucson two Saturdays ago and it sat there for maybe 20 minutes before I smelled plastic melting. Turns out ash can hold heat way longer than you'd think, like 24 to 48 hours if there's a deep bed of coals, so that bucket was already softening by the time I walked back out. I know this sounds like common sense, but I've seen three neighbors on my street do the exact same thing, and one of them melted a hole clean through his deck boards. From now on I dump ash into a metal can and add water before it goes anywhere near the trash. What do you all use for a cool down setup, and does anyone actually wait the full two days or just wing it like I did?
