Pro tip: check your local soil before buying a whole pallet of sod
I wasted about $400 on a full pallet of St. Augustine grass last spring because it looked great at the garden center. My backyard clay soil was way too compacted and wet, so half the sod just rotted in place within a couple of weeks. I should have tested a small patch first or even just aerated the area properly. Has anyone else had this happen and found a grass type that handles heavy clay better?

Half the sod just rotted in place" sounds like my last attempt at a garden. Did you at least get a good clay sculpture out of the deal?

Actually had the opposite happen with my lawn last year. The cheap sod I bought was so dry it just turned to dust and blew away. Wasted a whole weekend laying it before it all disintegrated.
