Pro tip: I finally found a way to keep my patio umbrella from tipping over in the wind.

I was so tired of chasing it across the yard every time a storm blew through. I filled a 5-gallon bucket with concrete and sunk the base pole into it, and it hasn't moved an inch since. Has anyone else tried something like this, or is there a better way?

Didn't your bucket get super heavy to move around? My buddy did that but used sand instead of concrete, so he could still dump it out at the end of summer. It worked okay until a really bad thunderstorm sent the whole thing rolling like a giant wheel across his deck.

cracked up at @kai657's description of a giant rolling death trap, i can just picture that thing barreling across a deck lol. i tried weighting mine with cinder blocks stacked around the base but that just created a new hazard when someone tripped over them at night. ended up drilling a hole through the pole and running a long steel stake through it into the ground like a tent peg, works great but now i have a permanent hole in my yard to dodge. my neighbor just gave up and bolted his directly to his deck railing, which looks janky but honestly hasn't failed yet.
