PSA: A client in Bellingham told me my paver base looked like 'a bag of marbles' and now I always compact in 2-inch lifts.
Has anyone else found that specific depth is the key to a patio that doesn't sink after the first winter?

Is that really the main thing to worry about? I've seen patios done with thicker lifts hold up fine if the base material is right. Seems like one guy's bad experience became a rule.

Two inches is the sweet spot. Thicker lifts just don't compact right, no matter the material. Seen it fail too many times.

Funny enough the LIFT height matters way less than how WET the base material is when you compact it. Bone dry aggregate won't lock up right even with perfect lifts.
