PSA: My neighbor's $400 composite deck looks brand new after 5 years while my wood one is a constant weekend project.

I spent every spring staining and sealing my pressure-treated pine deck in Mesa, but his composite boards just get a quick hose down and still look perfect, so why are we still pretending wood is the better choice for a backyard deck?

Ugh, tell me about it. I finally gave up and switched to composite after years of the same struggle, and I'm never going back. Why do we make things so hard on ourselves?

Totally get what you mean about making things hard on ourselves! I was the same way, insisting on wood because it was "right" or something. That switch you made is exactly what did it for me too. Once I tried composite, I realized I was just being stubborn for no good reason. It's like we pick a hill to die on and forget there's a whole nicer park down the road.

But I actually like the work wood takes. That little bit of upkeep feels like caring for something real, not just having a thing. It's not about being stubborn, it's about what feels right in your hands.
