Ripped out my whole weed barrier system after 3 summers of failure
I laid down that black landscape fabric under 4 inches of bark mulch in my backyard in Portland back in 2021. First year was great, hardly any weeds. By year 2 the mulch had decomposed enough that weeds were popping through the fabric itself. The straw that broke me was last weekend when I pulled up a section and found 3 layers of fabric all tangled up with roots and mud. Tried the cardboard method a week ago as a desperate move. Layered thick cardboard boxes from Costco, wet them down, then put fresh mulch on top. Dude, it's been 9 days and not a single weed poking through. Plus the cardboard breaks down naturally in about 6 months so no garbage. Anyone else ditch the fabric for cardboard? How long did yours last?

Wait does the cardboard actually hold up through a whole Portland rainy season though? I tried something similar last fall and after like 2 months of constant drizzle it turned into this mushy sludge that the mulch just sank into. Maybe I didn't lay it thick enough or something. What kind of cardboard are you using Costco boxes are pretty heavy duty right?
