Stone walkway or just a mowing strip? My neighbor swears I'm overthinking this.

Last Sunday I was out by my shed laying down some flagstone for a small path to the fire pit. My neighbor Bob walked over and said I was wasting my time because grass would just grow right through the cracks in 6 months. He told me to pour concrete instead, but I like the natural look. I've got about 40 square feet to cover and I'm stuck between doing it my way or listening to a guy who's had his backyard for 20 years. What would you do if you had to pick between easy maintenance and something that actually looks good?

Hear you loud and clear, man. Stick with the flagstone and just buy some polymeric sand to fill the joints, that's what keeps the grass out while keeping the natural look you want.

Whoa hold up, is this really as deep as people make it? I mean, I get that grass growing through cracks is annoying but I've seen some yards where the grass and stone look like they belong together after a few years. Honestly, a little bit of green popping through flagstone gives it that old English garden vibe or whatever lol. Polymeric sand is a pain to install right too, it always looks like crap if you don't get the consistency perfect. Plus once that stuff hardens it's basically concrete, so if you ever want to pull a stone up you're screwed. I'd just let the grass do its thing for a season and see if it really bothers you that much.

Wait, are you saying the grass actually looks good after a few years or it just doesn't bother you as much cause you're used to it? Cause i've seen that "lived in" look but half the time it just looks like neglect lol.
