String lights or bug zapper? I chose wrong and ate my words

Last Saturday I had to pick between hanging patio string lights or setting up that big electric bug zapper for a cookout. I went with the zapper because it was already on the charger, but it scared everyone with this loud ZAP every 20 seconds and my burgers got cold while people stayed inside. Has anyone else had a backyard feature that totally backfired on them?

The $40 citronella torch set I bought last summer worked way better than any zapper for keeping bugs away. We lit them about an hour before people showed up and the whole patio smelled like a campfire instead of a bug apocalypse. They still got used plenty during cookouts, just without the killer soundtrack.
