That neighbor lady who gave me a lecture about fire ants... she was right
I was out back last summer in Austin digging a little garden bed near the fence, and this older lady from two doors down just walks over and says "you're gonna get bit bad if you don't treat that soil first." I kind of waved her off like yeah yeah, I know what I'm doing. Three days later I stepped into that same spot in flip flops and got swarmed by fire ants. Must have been 30 bites on one foot, welts that lasted a week. Turns out she used to run a landscaping crew back in the 90s and knows every pest pattern in this neighborhood. I ended up going over to her house with a six pack and she spent an hour showing me how to spot their mounds before they get established. Now I always do a perimeter check with a stick before I touch any dirt. Has anyone else had a random neighbor give them advice that saved them a ton of trouble?

and i swear my neighbor saved me from a total termite disaster last spring. she saw the guy i hired to do a treatment and just shook her head, told me he was using the wrong stuff for our area. turns out she used to work for an exterminator for like ten years and knew exactly what kind of bugs we get around here. i had to fire that guy and pay someone else but it was way cheaper than fixing termite damage later. sometimes those old timer neighbors just know their stuff from years of dealing with the same problems.

Did you ever find out what the right treatment was? I bet it's some mix of chemicals that only locals know about because the big box stores just push whatever is on sale. My grandpa used to say you gotta match the poison to the bug and the bug to the soil type. Neighbors like yours are gold mines. They've seen every scam artist and half-baked solution come and go over the decades. It's wild how much stuff just gets passed down by word of mouth, not from any official training.
