That one conversation with a retired landscaper changed how I look at my soil
Last month I was digging up a patch of my backyard to put in a small vegetable bed, and this older guy walking his dog stopped to chat. He looked at my dirt and said 'son, you got more clay than a pottery studio back here' and laughed. He told me to mix in some coarse sand and compost instead of buying that bagged topsoil I was about to grab from Home Depot. Honestly, I did what he said and my tomatoes are twice as big now. Has anyone else had a random neighbor give you advice that actually worked out?

My buddy tried that sand trick and his carrots actually grew straight for once.

Bought a bag of coarse sand the next weekend after my neighbor told me the same thing about my heavy clay yard. Mixed it with some homemade compost and let it sit for a couple weeks before planting, and my beans went crazy this summer. Still can't believe I was about to spend money on bagged soil when a free chat with a stranger saved me.
