Update: Saw a neighbor in Milwaukee use a kiddie pool for a fire pit base
They just put a cheap plastic pool under their metal fire ring to catch all the ash and embers. I tried it in my own yard last month and it made cleanup way easier, plus it protects the grass. Anyone else have a simple hack for keeping a fire pit area tidy?

My old setup was a ring of bricks right on the lawn. I spent hours every spring raking out dead spots and reseeding. The plastic pool idea seemed silly at first, like it would just melt. I used a cheap one from the hardware store last fall, and the whole thing just lifts out in the morning. I dump the cold ash in the compost. My grass underneath is still green. It's one of those things you don't realize you need until you try it.

It's funny how the best fixes are often the simplest, cheap things we already have lying around.

Jump in with both feet, why don't we. I had that same brick setup for years and it was a nightmare. I finally got smart and tried the plastic pool thing last fall too. Now I just lift the whole thing out and dump the ash in the garden. Guess who spent half a day reseeding dead patches last spring? Me. What a difference a cheap piece of plastic makes.
