Wasted $140 on a smoker tube and chips when my $30 kettle does the same thing
Two weeks ago I grabbed a pellet tube and a 20 lb bag of competition blend pellets for my old kettle grill in my backyard in Fort Worth, thinking it would finally give me that clean smoke flavor. Instead the tube kept going out, the temp spiked to 350, and I ended up with jerky on the outside and raw chicken in the middle, so now the tube sits in my shed next to a half burned bag of pellets. Has anyone actually made one of these tubes work on a cheap kettle, or did I just burn $140 for nothing?
A 20 lb bag of competition blend is like 40 bucks alone so you're already in deeper than most folks go for a kettle experiment. The temp spike to 350 tells me the tube was sitting right over your coals and basically turned into a second fire, which is why the outside cooked fast and the middle stayed raw. Tubes work better laid off to the side near the intake so they smolder slow instead of getting lit up from below. Half burned pellets in the shed is a bummer but that bag will still work if you keep it sealed up dry.
