I just found out The Room had a budget of 6 million dollars
I was reading the Wikipedia page for The Room last night and that number hit me like a brick. Six million bucks for a movie with green screens that look like they were drawn in MS Paint and acting so stiff it makes a mannequin look lively. I always figured it was some cheap indie flick someone threw together for pocket change. How did that much cash get spent on a film where the football scene goes on forever? Has anyone else dug into the budget of their favorite bad movie and been shocked by the numbers?

Pulled up that same Wikipedia page a few years ago and had to read the budget line three times. Six million dollars could have bought you a small house in most of the country back then, instead it went to Tommy Wiseau buying camera equipment he never used and filming that rooftop scene where everyone looks like theyre fighting a ghost. I still laugh thinking about the $1,000 spent on plastic spoons for the picture frames, which somehow made sense to him. Reminds me of when I spent forty bucks on a fancy cheese grater and ended up using it twice before it went in the back of the drawer. The Room proves you can throw money at a movie and still get something that looks like a high school project with a better budget.

Did you also drop forty bucks on a cheese grater just to learn you only eat shredded cheese from a bag?

Nah see I gotta disagree with you guys here. The way I see it, the 6 million is what makes The Room so special. If it was a cheap movie made for spare change itd just be another bad movie you forget about. But knowing Tommy Wiseau had that much money and still made something that feels like it came from another planet is what makes it legendary. The spoons thing is dumb sure but its also kinda brilliant in its own way because now we all talk about it. Thats the thing about art sometimes you gotta spend money on weird stuff to create something people remember forever. The Room isnt just a bad movie its a piece of outsider art that couldnt exist any other way.
