My buddy Dave changed my mind about The Room after 3 rewatches

We were grabbing beers last Friday and he said the movie isn't bad because of bad acting, it's bad because Tommy Wiseau actually believed he was making a masterpiece. That hit me different because I always just laughed at it as a joke. He pointed out 2 specific scenes where the emotional beats are totally serious to him. Has anyone else had a bad movie flip on them after hearing a new take on it?

Totally get what @campbell.david is saying about that desperation. It actually reminds me of how people treat things like bad local bands or weird art shows. Everyone just laughs at them but nobody stops to think the person making it probably poured their whole heart into it and genuinely thought they were doing something great. That disconnect between what they intended and what we see is kind of sad when you really sit with it.

Wait did your buddy mention the rooftop scene where Tommy's talking about Lisa? Because I was at a buddy's house last year and his girlfriend who's a therapist was watching The Room with us for the first time. She got real quiet during the "you're tearing me apart Lisa" part and said it sounded like someone who genuinely believes he's losing someone. That messed with my head because now I can't unhear the desperation in his voice. Like yeah it's still funny but there's this layer of real sadness underneath it that makes the whole thing feel different. I started noticing it in all his scenes where he's trying to be vulnerable and it hits totally different now.
