PSA: That $10 DVD bin at Walmart nearly burned my house down

I grabbed a copy of The Room from a bargain bin last weekend for $10, thought it'd be a laugh for a bad movie night. Popped it in my old player and the disc started wobbling so bad it scratched itself up, then the player started smelling like burnt plastic. The movie itself is hilarious but that cheap disc pressed in some off-label factory in Mexico is not worth the risk. Anyone else run into dud discs from those bins?

3 out of 4 bargain bin discs I've bought play totally fine in my player, sounds like your old machine is the real fire hazard here.

Saw a video on YouTube last week from some guy who tested like 50 cheap discs from a dollar store bin. 80% worked fine for him, and the ones that didn't were just scratched up, not like some mystery fire hazard. Your player's laser might just be weak or dirty if it's having that many issues. I've got an old PS3 that still plays everything I throw at it, even the beat up ones from thrift shops. Honestly, the real risk is getting a disc that leaves a ton of fingerprint smudges or skips in the middle of a movie. Most of those bargain bins have stuff that was overstock or just returns, not some ticking time bomb.
