PSA: The Room is not the 'best bad movie' and I'm tired of pretending it is
Everyone in this group keeps crowning The Room like it's the gold standard, but I sat through a 35mm screening at the Music Box in Chicago last month and I honestly think Troll 2 is way more fun to watch with a crowd. The Room just has that one weird spoon picture and the flower shop scene, while Troll 2 gives you goblins, a popcorn seduction, and 'Oh my goooood' in the first 20 minutes. Plus half the Room jokes only land if you already watched the Disaster Artist. If The Room is your number one, tell me one scene besides 'You're tearing me apart' that actually makes you laugh out loud, because I can't find one.
The "flower shop scene" getting called out as one of the good bits is funny to me because my buddy Dave dragged me to a midnight showing of The Room a few years back and he kept whispering "just wait, it gets so bad it's good" through the whole first hour. Around the 60 minute mark he actually fell asleep on my shoulder, which tells you something. Meanwhile we saw Troll 2 at a different theater and he was doing the "Oh my goooood" line with the whole crowd for a week straight after. I still like The Room fine, but my gut says it works better as a meme than as an actual group watch, your mileage may vary on that. Not saying Troll 2 is some masterpiece either, because it's a mess too, but the crowd energy just hits different there.
