That conversation about Troll 2 at the bar last Friday hit me weird

I was out with some coworkers after our shift at the diner, and this new guy Dave starts going on about how Troll 2 is actually a genius piece of filmmaking because it's so earnest. I laughed at first, same as everyone else, but then he kept going and broke down the scene where the kid turns into a plant. He said the movie works because nobody on set knew they were making garbage, they thought they were crafting something real and that passion shows through every mistake. I sat there with my cold fries and realized I'd spent years just laughing at these movies, never once thinking about the people who poured their weekends into them for zero payoff. It hit different because I've been on the other side, I helped my buddy shoot a short film in 2019 that we thought was gold, and it's honestly terrible. Now I can't watch a bad movie the same way, I keep wondering if the actors knew or if they genuinely believed. Has anyone else had that moment where a bad movie stopped being a joke and started feeling kind of human?

So did Dave actually convince you on Troll 2, or did you just leave with a new respect for the people in it? Because I feel like those are two very different takeaways from the same cold fries.
