TIL some people actually enjoy The Room as a serious drama and not a comedy
I've always watched The Room for laughs with friends, it's a total disasterpiece lol. But last week I ran into a guy at a video store in Austin who swears it's a genuine misunderstood love story. I spent 45 minutes arguing with him about whether Tommy Wiseau actually meant it to be funny or not. What do you all think, is it pure accidental comedy or does it work on some level as a real movie?

So my buddy Marcus from back home actually met Tommy Wiseau at a film festival, right? He said Tommy was dead serious about the movie being a tragic love story, even got kinda offended when someone laughed. But here's the thing, Marcus watched The Room after that and tried to see it as a drama and he said it just broke his brain, like trying to watch a cat video with sad music playing over it. It's like Tommy accidentally made this perfect comedy because he had no idea what he was doing, like a kid drawing a horse that ends up looking hilarious. You can argue it has heart or whatever, but the dialogue and plot are so broken that it can't ever work the way Tommy wanted it to.

Stick with the accidental comedy take because it explains a lot about how people see things differently. This whole thing reminds me of how some folks genuinely think the food at a certain chain restaurant is gourmet just because the menu says "artisan," even though it's clearly just microwaved stuff. People get attached to the idea that something is deep or meaningful, especially if they've sunk time into defending it. Tommy Wiseau pouring his heart into that mess and missing the mark by a mile is like watching someone try to paint a masterpiece with their feet and then getting mad when you call it modern art. It's just a case of intention not matching reality, and no amount of arguing changes what's actually on the screen.
