Why does nobody mention fast forwarding the boring parts makes bad movies way better
Back in the VHS days my friends and I would sit through every second of a terrible movie because we paid $3 to rent it and we were gonna get our money's worth. Fast forward to now and I've started hitting the 1.5x speed button on slow scenes and it fixed my whole problem with these flicks. Last month I watched a 94 minute sci fi stinker in about 55 minutes and it was honestly a better movie that way. The long boring walking scenes and pointless dialogue just fly by, and the cheesy action and bad effects hit even harder when they're sped up a little. My buddy thinks I'm ruining the point of bad movie night but I told him the point is having fun, not suffering. Anyone else mess with playback speed or do you all suffer through the slow parts like it's a rule?
Boy, I have to push back on the sci fi stinker part. Speeding up the bad stuff is one thing, but you are not actually watching the movie at that point, you are watching a highlight reel. Take a slow burn horror like The Shining. Half the dread comes from those long steady shots and the quiet moments that crawl by. Crank that to 1.5x and you lose the whole mood, it turns into a comedy. Even a real stinker like Battlefield Earth has pacing that the director picked on purpose, bad as it is. You had fun with it, sure, but that is a different thing than the movie being better.
