My 5-year-old KitchenAid mixer's planetary gear just stripped mid-batch of bagels yesterday.

I was kneading a stiff dough on speed 2 when it made a horrible grinding noise and stopped turning. Had to finish by hand, which was a total arm workout. Anyone know if this is a common failure point or if I just got unlucky?

Oof, that's actually a pretty common issue with those mixers.

Honestly I saw a whole thread on another forum where people were having the same problem with the motor getting loud. One person said theirs started making a grinding sound after just a few months. Another mentioned the speed control would get stuck and only work on high. Seems like a design flaw they never fixed.

Gray that's rough. My neighbor went through three of those mixers in two years. First one the motor started smoking when she was making cookie dough. Second one the paddle arm just kinda bent one day. Third one the speed dial broke off completely. She finally gave up and switched brands. Hope yours holds up better but man that's frustrating.
