My wife's grandma in Phoenix said my sourdough was 'too perfect' and lacked heart

She told me to stop weighing ingredients so exactly and just feel the dough, which honestly changed my whole approach. Anyone else get told their baking is too by-the-book?

Reminds me of my aunt who insists a perfect pie crust needs a few thumbprints.

That bit about thumbprints being a secret ingredient is so true. My grandma always said the best crusts have a little human touch in them, literally. It's like the little mistakes make it taste more homemade. I'd take a messy pie with character over a perfect store bought one any day.

Your aunt is onto something... my thumbprints are usually from me trying to fix a tear in the dough. I guess that's my secret ingredient, panic and desperation. It still tastes fine in the end though.
