Took me three batches to realize my oven thermometer was off by 25 degrees

I kept getting cookies that spread way too thin and finally checked my oven temp with a second thermometer - turns out my built-in display was lying to me the whole time. Has anyone else had their oven run way hotter or colder than what it says on the dial?

Yeah cheap oven thermometer fixed it for me too. I just clip it on the middle rack and check it every time now before I start baking.

Same thing happened to me with a batch of sugar cookies. They turned into flat, crispy discs. Finally grabbed a cheap oven thermometer from the grocery store and found mine was running 30 degrees hot. It's wild how much of a difference that little dial makes, you know?
