Nearly ruined a wedding cake because I ignored the oven thermometer in Secaucus

I was making a three-tier vanilla cake for my cousin's wedding last month in Secaucus and thought my oven's built-in temp gauge was close enough. Turned out it was off by 50 degrees, so the first two layers came out like hockey pucks and I had to start over at 11 PM. Has anyone else had their oven lie to them like that and just trust the little dial instead of a separate thermometer?

It's funny how we'll trust the built in stuff over the cheap fix every single time.

Lol I was literally reading a thread about this the other day where someone was talking about their car having some expensive OEM part that kept failing. They swapped it out for some random brand from Amazon and it held up way longer. @daniel214 you're right though, there's something psychological about the default option that makes us think it's safer or better. Even when the cheap fix has better reviews or comes from a known supplier, we still hesitate. I guess marketing and brand trust just messes with our heads.

Wait, isn't the cheap fix usually the one that actually works though?
