Showerthought: I heard a baker on a podcast say 'a failed cake is just a future trifle' and it changed my whole week.

A whole week for a cake quote?

Yeah david_hayes, some of these bakers act like they're drafting a peace treaty and not a price for flour and eggs lol. I asked for a simple birthday cake and got a whole questionnaire back about my "vision". Like, my vision is a chocolate cake that doesn't cost a month's rent. A week is crazy unless they're actually growing the wheat themselves.

Nah, gotta disagree here. The quote thing makes total sense if you've ever seen a custom bakery operation up close. Custom cakes are basically edible architecture, and a good baker has to factor in like 15 different variables before throwing out a number. Flavors, filling types, structural support, delivery logistics, decorating time. Plus most small bakeries are literally one or two people doing everything, so they're not just sitting around waiting for your email. A week is totally reasonable when they're juggling 20 other orders, sourcing ingredients, and probably running a storefront at the same time. The questionnaire thing is actually a sign they care about not messing up your cake lol.
