A client told me my fades were too "heavy" last month

Ngl, I was pissed at first but she was right - I was leaving too much weight at the parietal ridge. Now I use a lighter hand above the ear and it's made a huge difference, has anyone else had to totally change a technique after one bad review?

Oh absolutely, I had the exact same thing happen a few years back. A regular told me my fades were leaving a "hard line" behind the ear and I was honestly a little defensive at first. But I went home that night, looked at my work in different lighting, and realized she was right - I was rushing the blend and not paying enough attention to how the scalp curves. I switched from a clipper-over-comb method to using more shears in that area and now my fades are way softer. It was hard to hear at the time but that one comment probably improved my work more than any class I ever took.

Gotta disagree here. I think sometimes clients just throw out terms like "heavy" without really knowing what they mean. Could be she just didn't like how dense the fade looked on her head specifically, not that your technique was wrong. I've had people say my blends were "too soft" and other barbers said they were perfect. You gotta read the room but also trust your own eye. That hard line behind the ear thing is a real issue for sure, but fades being "heavy" is often just personal taste, not a universal flaw.
