A regular in my chair yesterday said he thinks barbering is 90% listening, 10% cutting
He was talking about how his old barber retired and the new guy just cuts without talking. It made me think, because I've always seen the conversation as part of the service (you know, the classic barber shop vibe). But then I wondered, are we therapists or are we just people who cut hair really well? Where do you draw the line? Is the talk just as important as the taper for you guys?

That "witness not a therapist" thing from finley_wells66 really hits. I used to think the talking was just extra, but it's the whole point. A good cut is just the ticket for that real talk.

My uncle ran a shop for 40 years and always said the chair is a sacred space. It's not about being a therapist, it's about being a witness. People tell you things in that ten minutes they wouldn't say anywhere else because you're not in their life. The cut gets them in the door, but that human connection is what they're really paying for. A silent barber is just a machine with scissors. The line is drawn when you start giving advice instead of just listening.
