Clipper guards vs freehand fading, which approach actually wins?
I spent 4 years in Austin doing every fade with guards and never touched a freehand trimmer, but about 6 months ago I watched a guy at a shop on South Congress do a zero fade with no guards and it blew my mind. Since then I've been mixing both, using guards for the bulk then freehanding the bottom half, but I still second-guess myself when the hair texture gets coarse. Is there a consensus on when to trust the guard system versus just going freehand, or is it really just whatever the client's head dictates?
