Honestly thought those hot towel cabinets were just for show
Ngl, I used to skip the hot towel step because it felt like extra work for no real reason. Then a barber in Austin showed me his routine, using a cabinet that keeps them at 140 degrees for exactly 7 minutes. He said it opens the pores and makes the skin way easier to work with. Tried it on a client with really tough beard hair, and my razor just glided through like butter. It cut my shave time down by almost five minutes and the guy said it was the closest shave he's ever had. Anyone else have a tool they thought was pointless that actually changed their game?

My old shop had one of those cabinets and I always thought it was just a fancy prop. I figured a hot towel was a hot towel, right? But then I saw a guy use a proper timed system and the difference was crazy. It totally changes how the hair takes to the blade, and now I wouldn't skip that step for anything.

Guess I've been giving bad shaves for years.

That "fancy prop" line hits home. It's the same with a lot of things people do by hand, like sharpening tools or mixing paint. You can get by with the rough way for years and never know what you're missing. Then you see the real method done right, and it ruins you. You can't go back to the old way once you know how much better it can be.
