Straight razor vs clipper for the nape - which side are you on?
I've been going back and forth on this for like a year now. Last month I had this guy in my chair in Austin, real picky about his neckline. I used my clippers like I always do for a clean line, and he told me it looked too harsh. So I grabbed my straight razor and did the same guy the next week, and he said it looked way more natural but took me twice as long. Then I had another client yesterday who insisted on clippers only because he gets razor bumps. So now I'm wondering if there's a clear winner here or if it's all about the client's hair type and skin. What do you guys use for the nape and why?

Switched to razor for fine hair, clippers still win on coarse texture.

That's the thing about this whole debate, it's the same pattern I see everywhere in life. People want a tool that does everything perfectly, but the real trick is knowing when to switch approaches based on who you're working with. Clippers give you that sharp, defined edge real fast, but they don't forgive a bumpy neck or tight skin like a razor does if you take your time. A straight razor will follow the natural curves better, but you're trading speed for that smooth finish, and some folks just can't handle the blade against their skin no matter what. It's like choosing between a framing hammer and a finish hammer, each one has its place and you look like a fool if you use the wrong one for the job. You got to read the client first, their hair, their skin, their history, and make the call from there. What's the one thing that always makes you switch from your usual tool?
