The client who jerked her head away mid-fade and taught me to speak up sooner
I was 20 minutes into a skin fade on a guy in my chair last Tuesday when he flinched and pulled away right as my clipper hit the side of his head. No warning, nothing, just a sudden jerk, and I nicked a little notch above his ear that I had to blend out for another 10 minutes to make it look like it never happened. I sat there with the clipper running and realized I had skipped my usual check-in because he had been quiet the whole time and I figured he was fine. Turns out he had a tickly spot right there that he never mentioned, and we both just sat in the awkward aftermath of it. The fix was simple, I apologized, told him exactly what I was about to do, and asked him to nod before I moved the blade past that spot. He ended up tipping me 30 percent anyway, but the real thing I took from it was that if I had asked one question at the start, none of that would have gone down. I started doing a quick 10 second check with every new client now, asking if they have any spots that are sensitive before I even plug in. Does anyone else have a go to line for that, or do you just read the room?
