TIL that using a straight razor on every client isn't always the best look, even if it's what the old timers swear by.

I started taking off too much texture on a guy with really coarse hair last month and had to buzz him down to a 2 just to fix it, so now I ask first before grabbing the razor no matter what the 'rules' say.

Almost sued him" is WILD. I can't believe that old timer just went in with a razor without a second thought. That's exactly why I started asking every single person if they've got sensitive skin or any issues before I even heat up the towel. One guy told me he had a sunburn on his neck I couldn't even see yet, and if I had razored over that it would've been a nightmare. These old school guys think they've seen it all but they don't know about modern skin conditions or people's weird allergies. That questionnaire card idea is smart even if it's a pain to remember every time.

My buddy runs a shop two blocks from mine and he had this older guy come in, real traditionalist type. He straight razored the back of his neck without asking, like he always does, and the guy had some kind of skin condition he didn't know about. It ripped up the whole back of his neck and the guy almost sued him. He had to pay for a dermatologist visit out of pocket to make it go away. Now he keeps a little questionnaire card in his pocket for every new customer before he even touches a razor. He learned the hard way that the old heads didn't know everything.
